About
Poet, teacher, husband, dad. Pilgrim.
Andrew Calis first wrote a poem in elementary school. It was about a really, really tall tree. Now a high school English teacher, he still loves to marvel at the created world and share his enthusiasm for language and stories.
Andrew holds a Ph.D. in English Literature from The Catholic University of America. His debut book of poetry, Pilgrimages (Wipf and Stock, 2020), has been praised by James Matthew Wilson for having “the intensity of Hopkins” and for “layer[ing] light on light in hopes of helping us to see.”
Andrew's work has been featured in The Atlantic, America, Dappled Things, Presence, Convivium, and elsewhere, and has been a Best of the Net finalist. He was also featured on SportsCenter the day a student juked him so bad he almost injured himself on the last day of school.
Andrew lives in Maryland with his wife and four children.
